Literacy Narrative

Growing up in a country that is very much different than the one I currently reside in, reading was a big part of my life. As a child, my parents supplied me with an abundance of reading material to feed my curious mind. Although my parents didn’t read to me ever night before I went to bed, I was able to read to myself to learn how words form sentences, stories, and novels. I often times read “krimmies”, or criminologically based books about adventures of detectives and the downfall of the bandits. Knowing how important it is to read on a frequent basis, I do plan to read to my child or children if I ever decide to have any of myself. From bedtime stories to  newspaper articles, my child will read from an early age onwards. Going into school, the way my children will, I have always tended to skim over bodies of text to pick out my desired answers and information. “Fluff” and other irrelevant information simply got ignored by my swift eyes.

Attending schools in Germany, I was taught to read with care and close attention to detail. I was never taught anything unnecessarily fancy like SQ4R. I have always enjoyed books and stories about great wealth. One of my favorite stories as a child was Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves from the 1001 Nights. Today, I read a lot of company SEC filings about financials and other financial statements to satisfy my curiosity. I have recently read Timothy Sykes’ “An American Hedge Fund”, which is his personal Biography and walks the reader through his successes as a stock trader. Although I know where to find them, I do not enjoy listening to audiobooks at the moment.

Reading efficiently and in an understanding manner has greatly helped me through middle-school and through high school as I wrote honors english essays and prepared speeches. Also, reading well in college is vastly important to me because I will be exposed to books that I have never picked up before. Reading college-level books will not exactly be a problem for me since many books are far below the European reading level standards. I expect to be challenged in my college english and composition classes. Since I have never had and currently do not have any reading deficiencies, I am looking forward to a great year of reading and writing in my classes.
